Commentary

1 Samuel 20 is a chapter that focuses on the relationship between Jonathan and David. Jonathan, the son of King Saul, is a loyal friend to David, even though his father is trying to kill him. Jonathan makes a covenant with David, promising to protect him and to help him in any way he can. Jonathan even goes so far as to give David his own armor and weapons, so that David can protect himself. The chapter also shows the lengths to which Jonathan is willing to go to protect David. He makes a plan with David to test his father's intentions. Jonathan tells David to hide in a field and then sends a servant to ask Saul if he can go and find David. When Saul says yes, Jonathan knows that his father does not intend to harm David. The chapter ends with Jonathan and David reaffirming their friendship and loyalty to each other. Jonathan promises to always be there for David and to help him in any way he can. This is a beautiful example of true friendship and loyalty, and it serves as a reminder that even in difficult times, we can still find people who will stand by us and support us.
